The VERTEX F4 controller 1/16 DIN is our LOW COST yet HIGH SPEC controller. Excellent value for money, gives good control in most applications. Configurable on input between various thermocouples inputs from the keypad by the user. Can be ordered with PT100, linear mA, linear mV and Voltage inputs. Choose between "Relay Output" or "Solid State Relay Output" or as an optional extra "4~20 mA 0~10 Vdc etc output" or to convert the main relay output to be a second relay alarm when ordering. It comes standard with the main heating output and one relay alarm but you can order it with the main output converted to a full function second alarm or with the Alarm converted to a cooling relay output with proportional or on/off control. There are two optional extras, firstly the RS485 comm's used for networking and or MMI interfacing and the gasket option that conforms to IP65. Without the gasket the basic unit conforms to IP63. (Avaliable in 1/16 DIN (48 x 48) and 1/4 DIN (96 x 96) )

Output
You can choose either "relay" or "solid state relay" or "4~20mA" output when ordering this controller. It is not user changeable.

Relay Output

This is a Form A / SPST rated at 2 amps at 240 Vac resistive load. This output is the main "heating" output and can be set as on/off or Proportional or full PID control mode with paramater auto-tune function. This output can converted to be a "Alarm Function Relay Output" and act as a second alarm so tha the controller only has 2 Alarms.
Solid State Relay

This is typically 24 Vdc suitable for switching most makes of Solid State Relays that can be switched by a voltage between 3~32 vdc (typical spec). (Minimum restive load of 250 ohms)

4~20 mA Output Current Output: 4~20 mA into a resistive load of 600 Ωmax.

Control Modes
This is a "Relay Output" or "Solid State Relay Output" controller. Control is achieved by switching either a Relay or SSR output on and off to regulate the power to the load in order to maintain a preset temperature. You can use this controller in either a "Full PID mode" or "Proportional" or "On/Off" mode. All of these end up switching the output on and off in some fashion to reach and maintain a preset temperature. For more info about "Control" please read our simple explanation "Basics of Temperature Controllers"
PID
Proportional, Integral and Derivative control mode is the fullest, most responsive type of control you can have with a controller of this sort. The controller has an "Auto-Tune" function that will set the PID parameters for you when activated, to suite your system and give the best possible results on your system.
P with manual reset
Proportional control allows for the output to be proportionally switched on and off more or less depending on the offset from the setpoint. The manual offset allows you to correct for the inability of straight "proportional" control to cater for dynamic changes in the system which may result in an "offset".
ON/OFF
On/off control is the simplest form of control. To make the controller on/off set the P band setting to 0. On/off control works with the "hysteresis" parameter. If you have a "Hyst" set at 1 deg C then the output will be switched on until the measured temperature reaches the setpoint + "Hyst" of 1 deg C where it will turn off. It will stay off until the measured temperature drops to the setpoint - "Hyst" at which point it will turn back on again.

Alarm Output

The Alarm Output is a potential free relay output that can be used for any number of purposes. It is a Form A SPST 2 Amp 240 Vac rated relay. It can be configured to work in any one of the modes listed below.

NOTE: This Alarm output can be converted to be a second "Cooling Relay Output" so that the controller esentially has Heating and a Cooling output for control purposes. If this is done it can be either on/off or Prop control only. (Not full PID)

Available Functions
  • No Alarm
  • Process high alarm
  • Process low alarm
  • Deviation high alarm
  • Deviation low alarm
  • Inside deviation band alarm
  • Outside deviation band alarm
Alarm Modes
  • Normal mode
  • Standby mode
  • Latch mode
  • Standby and Latch mode
Notes
  • Each "function" has two options, an A and a B. This is in effect changing the "Form" of the contact or in simple terms making it function like a normally open or normally closed alarm. Please refer to the user manual for more information on this. It does not however actually change the status, the relay is always normally open without power.
  • The above choice also effects the way the alarm LED functions. Please refer to the user manual for more info.
  • Each alarm can have a timer "delay" associated with it. This means that after the alarm condition has been met the timer kicks in and must time out before the relay changes state.
  • The Hysteresis for the alarm (s) works at and below the setpoint and not around it like the main control output.
  • The main control output can be converted to function as a full alarm so that you have two alarms rather than one control output and one alarm.
  • This budget controller comes standard with only one alarm output unless you convert and use the main control output as a second alarm.

RS485 Communications
As an optional extra you can order this controller with a RS485 port that will allow communications with your PLC, MMI, PC or DCS system using "Modbus RTU" Protocol
Notes
  • This option must be chosen at the time of ordering.
  • If you choose this option VERTEX will supply the hardware in the controller and the "protocol" required to set up the communications. We do not supply the external "master" software required for your PLC, MMI, DCS or PC or the expertise to make it work.
  • Our Modbus interface port communicates using a serial EIA-484 physical layer.
  • Read up about RS485 Modbus communications at
